Wendy's daughter, Kirra, would have been 25 this summer. Wendy reached ou to me and many of her friends for answers, for support and comfort after the death of her only child. It was during the time of the Yosemite fire and the smoke choked our valley. Again this summer a fire in the mountains brought the choking haze that reminded me of that time. Another friend who has lost a child spoke to me at the same time Wendy was reaching out. He described the sunflower his college bound daughter had planted and how seeing it out the kitchen window after she left made him cry about his losses. His mention may have been the impetus for the mention of the sunflower in my song for Wendy. Only after the song was finished over the cours of 3 nights waking at 3am did I discover Wendy was using the sunflower as a representation of Wendy's vibrant life.
This summer's forest fire days reminded me that I needed to make this song available for Wendy to hear again. I played it recently for my parents and sister Eileen and her husband Steve after I saw Wendy at the Dangberg Ranch concert where our duo played. My brother Mike took a recording from my iPhone with Anthony on the piano at one of my lessons Mike made this YouTube tribute. |
