Another day in the studio with Anthony Jannsen - my producer, teacher and mentor - yesterday. My voice was giving out and sounding gravelly and breaking while I tried to sing This Very Short Time in my falsetto voice. No wonder - I had been singing much of the weekend at Nathan's jam Saturday afternoon into the late hours and then practicing the high hard parts of Write It Again. but I was still unhappy with my voice and its reluctance to cooperate. I had heard of remedies and tragedies regarding voice loss but I was still surprised. Anthony was still happy with the four songs we worked on - one we just decided was good enough from the scratch take ( News Blues). He gave me a lecture about this being the biggest priority for me right now so now ruining of my voice with yelling or singing too loud and too high. For a 31 year old he can sure deliver a fatherly lecture to a middle aged woman...
He also marveled about the appropriate length of all of my songs. - the perfect Pop song length - 3 1/2 minutes. Of course I am in a band and I know from planning our set list and talking to Nathan that there is a certain length that is optimal so yes - I do think about that when I write a song. Maybe he was just reaching to find something to compliment. That was two hours. Tomorrow we plan on 2-3 hours so that we can finish up all of the songs and get them recorded MP3 and to my fellow supporting musicians - Danny Wold on drums, then Kyle or Pat as my second picks. Nathan will do some guitar riffs and solos and sing. I have thought of using some young people for the Comet Katz song. Mary Hataway may lend her hand on that song with her guitar - appropriate since she is a comet kat awesome bump skier.
